BACKGROUND

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) is advancing a comprehensive approach to wayfinding at Orlando International Airport (MCO), focused on creating a more intuitive, seamless, and stress-free travel experience for all guests.

As MCO continues to grow and evolve, investments are being made that will better support the scale and complexities of today’s operations.

The phased Wayfinding and Nomenclature Enhancement initiative is designed to reduce confusion, streamline navigation, and improve clarity across the entire passenger journey.

These efforts are part of a broader five-year plan involving multiple ongoing capital improvement and facility enhancement projects throughout the airport.

PROJECT TIMLINE: Ongoing in phases

PROJECT FACTS

GOAA’s wayfinding strategy is focused on making navigation simple, consistent, and easy to understand, no matter how guests arrive or depart the airport. Because wayfinding assets involve a complex network of connected properties, the implementation of enhancements is being coordinated in a phased approach.

Enhancements include:

Nomenclature

Adopting a numerical naming system for Terminals (Terminals A and B renamed to “Terminal 1”; Terminal C renamed to “Terminal 2”) will reduce passenger confusion and streamline operations throughout the airport.

Roadway Wayfinding & Modernization

As part of a Roadway Master Plan, existing signs are being redesigned with improved readability, clearer messaging, and modern standards.

New digital roadway airline directory signage will provide real-time updates, including airline activity and airport information. These high-resolution 10mm LED signs represent a next-generation approach to roadway wayfinding infrastructure, particularly suited for complex roadway systems, offering enhanced clarity while allowing maintenance without traffic disruptions.

A phased implementation is underway, beginning with the first installation on Heintzelman Boulevard, before expanding to Jeff Fuqua Boulevard.

Interior Wayfinding & Modernization

Interior wayfinding and signage updates are being implemented alongside terminal renovations, including restroom upgrades and airside refurbishments. New signage will improve visibility, consistency, and ease of navigation throughout the terminals and gates areas.

The Wayfinding and Nomenclature Enhancement project represents a holistic transformation of how a guest experiences and navigates Orlando International Airport. By aligning naming conventions, modernizing signage, and integrating real-time digital information, GOAA is creating a clear, intuitive, and user-friendly environment. These improvements are being thoughtfully coordinated with other major airport projects, ensuring a cohesive and future-ready experience. The results will be a more seamless journey from curb to gate, reducing stress, saving time, and allowing travelers to focus on what matters most.
